Ms. McGuirk's 6th Grade Science Class

2010-2011 6th Grade Science Syllabus

When in doubt - check the syllabus!  I try to make my syllabus as comprehensive as possible, but please note that I cannot possibly fit every detail and nuance of my class into a 3-page document.  If you ever have any questions or need anything clarified, never hesitate to contact me via phone or email.

In summary, these are some especially important points made in my syllabus:
  • Please sign and return the bottom section of the last page to Ms. McGuirk by Monday, August 9th
  • Being organized is extremely important in science; your science binder should remain organized with each tab labeled appropriately and your science folder should keep your current homework assignment and week's catalysts.
  • A weekly quiz assessing that week's learning will be held each Thursday on a consistent basis.
  • Unit tests will be held on the following dates: Unit 1 Test: Thursday, August 19th; Unit 2 Test: Thursday, September 30th; Unit 3 Test: Thursday, November 4th; Unit 4 Test: November 23rd; Unit 5 Test: Thursday, February 3rd; Unit 6 Test: Thursday, March 10th.
  • A science midterm exam will be held the week of December 13th, and a science final exam will be held the week of May 23rd.
  • TCAP testing will take place April 11th through April 15th.
  • Behavior reflections are assigned after a scholar receives 3 in-class warnings in one class period.  If this behavior continues and the same scholar receives 3 in-class warnings again that week, an after-school detention will be issued.  After school detention will be held on Fridays from 4:30 - 5:15 pm.  It is the responsibility of the scholar and the parent/guardian to arrange pick-up from detention.  Failure to attend detention will result in a written referral.  After-school detentions are only assigned once in a semester; if a scholar exhibits continuous behavior, written discipline referrals will be submitted to the office each subsequent time.
  • As part of 100% responsibility, I will not provide extra copies of any assignment - if they can be uploaded to my Quia website or Weebly website they will and the scholars can access them there on their own time.
  • Make-up work will be provided upon the return of a scholar from an excused absence, and that work is due 5 days upon return to school.
  • If you need to contact me, please feel free to do so via email or phone.  Please call before 8 pm on weekdays, after 1 pm on Sundays, and email me at any time.  I will try my best to return email messages 24 hours after reading them.
  • Please check TeacherEase (for up-to-date grades and behavior logs), my Quia (www.quia.com/profiles/amcguirk14), and this website on a regular basis.
