Ms. McGuirk's 6th Grade Science Class

Monday, October 4th: Potential and Kinetic Energy Cornell Notes

Today was our first day of our third unit on Energy.  We read Chapter 12 Section 1 (pages 346-348) and took notes on the following terms: Energy, Kinetic Energy, Potential Energy, Elastic Potential Energy, Gravitational Potential Energy, and Chemical Potential Energy.

Tonight's Homework: Using your Cornell notes from today’s lesson, make 6 note cards for your new vocabulary.  On the front of each note card, write the vocabulary word (found on the left side of your Cornell notes from today).  On the back of each note card, write the definition you’ve copied (found on the right side of your Cornell notes from today).

Tuesday, October 5th: Potential/Kinetic Energy Webquest

To get some further knowledge and practice with our terms this week, scholars completed some practice questions and a webquest on what we learned yesterday.

Wednesday, October 6th: Potential/Kinetic Energy Lab

Today we completed a lab activity where scholars gave energy to certain materials and objects.  We watched a balloon get blown up and let go, which was an example of elastic potential energy changing into kinetic energy.  We stretched a rubber band to give it elastic potential energy.  Scholars stretched a slinky and then let it go, watched a yo-yo change from gravitational potential energy to kinetic energy and then back again, and bounced a tennis ball.

Tonight's homework: Complete a worksheet about potential and kinetic energy.

Thursday, October 7th: Weekly Quiz 8

Today's weekly quiz assessed the mastery of our lessons this week on energy, kinetic energy, and the three forms of potential energy (elastic potential energy, gravitational potential energy, and chemical potential energy).  We also started our second weekly quiz tracker for this unit.

Friday, October 8th: Forms of Energy Cornell Notes

In anticipation of our upcoming fall break, scholars started another lesson today.  We read pages 349-352 and defined the following terms: mechanical energy, thermal energy, chemical energy, electrical energy, light energy, sound energy, and nuclear energy.

Homework over Fall Break:Using your Cornell notes from today’s lesson, make 7 note cards for your new vocabulary.  On the front of each note card, write the vocabulary word (found on the left side of your Cornell notes from today). On the back of each note card, write the definition you’ve copied and an example of this form of energy! (found on the right side of your Cornell notes from today).

Monday, November 1, 2010: Unit Test Preparation Day #1

Today, scholars are doing one of two things depending on their academic achievement this unit.  If scholars missed more than a total of  5 questions combined on all of their weekly quizzes from this unit, they are creating their own customized practice quiz using the questions that they got wrong (see file below).  If scholars have not missed more than 5 questions total (this means that they scored higher than a 90% on every single quiz), they are creating their own science vocabulary catalogue using power point.  Scholars who are creating their own science vocabulary catalogue: Download the second file found below:
